Alzheimer’s Disease

What is Alzheimer’s disease?

Alzheimer’s disease is a progressive brain disorder that slowly damages memory, thinking, and reasoning skills. This neurological disease most commonly impacts older adults over the age of 65, with over 7 million Americans estimated to be living with Alzheimer’s disease. There is currently no cure for Alzheimer’s disease, but there are new medications and management strategies that can help lessen symptoms.

Strategies for Alzheimer’s disease Caregiving

For those caring for a loved one with Alzheimer’s disease, maintaining structure and stability can go a long way toward making the person feel safe. Try the four R’s:

  • Reassure: Calmly reassure them they’re safe, loved, and cared for. Make them feel mentally and physically comforted.

  • Routine: A consistent daily schedule reduces confusion and stress. Break down tasks into simple steps, making it easier for them to participate.

  • Reminisce: Photo albums, music from their youth, or memory boxes of special items can connect them to memories and happy emotions.

  • Redirect: If the person with Alzheimer’s disease gets agitated, try shifting their focus and by moving to a different, quieter room, presenting them with an activity or snack, or engaging them in simple activities like laundry or drawing to keep their mind busy.
