Dementia

What is Dementia?

Dementia refers to symptoms that result in a loss of memory, language, and other thinking abilities that are severe enough to interfere with daily life. Signs can include problems recalling recent events, difficulty concentrating or planning, trouble finding the right word for something, or sudden mood changes. It’s estimated that one in 10 older Americans has some form of dementia, with Alzheimer’s disease being the most common type of diagnosed dementia.

Strategies for Dementia Caregiving

Structure and stability are key strategies for dementia caregiving that can help the caregiver and their loved one. Keep a routine where things like eating, bathing, and activities are scheduled for the same time each day. Writing down appointments, to-do lists, and events keeps things predictable and can help with preparation and expectation of the person receiving care. Speak calmly and slowly, giving the person time to understand and respond. Reassure them by showing your support and providing a comfortable and familiar environment.
