Respite Care

What is Respite Care?

Respite care is a temporary break for primary caregivers from their caregiving duties. While they get a break and take time away from their caregiving duties, a designated backup caregiver steps in. A backup caregiver may be another family member, friend, or a professional caregiver. Respite care allows primary caregivers the chance to take time for themselves, whether to take care of personal needs, run errands, or recharge with some time alone. These vital breaks can help reduce caregiver stress, boost mental health, and make them more effective and present caregivers for their loved ones.

What is an Example of Respite Care?

An example of respite care is when a friend, family member, or neighbor takes over caregiving duties to provide the primary caregiver with a break. This allows the primary caregiver time to themselves—they might use this time to visit with friends or family, get out of the house for a few hours, catch up on chores, or simply read a new book without having to worry about their loved one.
