Faces of Careforth: Minnie Kulsh

Behind every strong organization is a strong foundation, and much of that stability comes from the work done by the finance team. From keeping operations running smoothly to ensuring long-term sustainability, this team’s expertise allows every other part of the company to thrive.

This month, we’re turning the spotlight on Senior Director and Assistant Controller Minnie Kulsh, who has been an integral part of our team for the past eight years. As a leader on our finance team, she helps provide the clarity and structure that guide our growth and ensure caregivers on our service get paid in a timely manner. In this Q&A, she shares insights into her career journey, what she enjoys most about her work, and the values that keep her motivated after nearly a decade with us.

What is your role and how long have you worked at Careforth?

I serve as the Senior Director and Assistant Controller at Careforth, where I play a key role in safeguarding and overseeing the organization’s financial health and integrity. I started off as an Accounting Manager and have grown into my current role over the last eight years.

What inspired you to join Careforth’s team?

While there are many reasons why I value my work here, Careforth’s mission stands above all. It is also rare in the field of finance to find the combination of a supportive, high-performing team and inspiring leadership that makes hard work both natural and rewarding. Even more meaningful is the opportunity to contribute to an organization that creates a positive impact in our community.

How do you support families and caregivers in your role, and why is it important?

Although my team does not work directly in the field with families, we ensure that our mission remains front and center in our work. We take pride in making sure caregivers are paid accurately and on time, support associates through our Payroll and Accounts Payable functions, and maintain Careforth’s financial records with precision so we can continue to grow, improve, and make an even greater impact.

Do you have a personal connection to caregiving that you’re comfortable sharing? If so, what is it?

Growing up, my siblings and I supported our parents as they cared for our grandparents. Those early experiences planted a lasting seed of compassion and responsibility, shaping how we would one day care for our own parents. After moving away from home, I continued to honor that commitment by volunteering with nonprofits dedicated to supporting seniors in our community. Now, having raised three incredible boys, I often marvel at how I navigated the challenges of their early years. I vividly remember the moments when it felt overwhelming, when it seemed like no one truly understood the journey.

What do you enjoy most about your role at Careforth?

I deeply value my dedicated, hardworking, and diverse team, and I am continually inspired by the supportive, growth-oriented leadership within my department and across Careforth. Most of all, I take pride in knowing that my work contributes to our organization’s ability to make a positive impact on over 10,000 families nationwide.

How do you contribute to our company’s mission and values?

My team lives out the values of Careforth every day. While our work centers on numbers, we lead with heart—cultivating trust, fostering relationships, and providing steadfast support to both caregivers and our associates, so they in turn can better serve caregivers and families. We are committed to excellence and consistently strive to go above and beyond in the quality of our work.

What’s something interesting about your job that people may not know?

I don’t just crunch numbers; together with my team, I help shape the organization’s financial strategy. We transform raw data into clear, actionable stories that executives can rely on. We make sure everything is audit-ready, with strong internal controls in place, and we approach our work like solving a series of complex, rewarding puzzles. We’re always exploring ways to streamline accounting systems, unlocking time and cost savings that help the company thrive.

How do you maintain a positive work-life balance in this field?

Careforth is truly one of the best places to work when it comes to work–life balance. The culture here not only values hard work but also prioritizes self-care, family, and life’s important moments. I’ve been able to travel across the globe each year to celebrate milestones with my loved ones, while also being present for everyday moments—whether it’s dropping my kids off at college, cheering at their football games, attending their school events, or following my own passion.

What advice would you give to someone considering a career in healthcare?

The healthcare industry is demanding: physically, emotionally, and mentally. If you’re driven by compassion, curiosity, or a desire to serve, that deeper motivation will carry you through the tough days. Finance in healthcare isn’t just about managing money. It’s about enabling care and healing. If you bring your analytical skills with a heart for service, you’ll be a powerful force for good.

What is one fun fact about you that your colleagues may not know about?

Outside of work, music is a big part of my life. I’m a singer, songwriter, and music composer; my third original is set to release at the end of September 2025. I also have been performing across the country with my band now for over a decade, and nothing beats the joy of bringing smiles to people’s faces through our music. It’s my creative outlet, my happy place—and a side of me that most of my close coworkers already know (and occasionally get a backstage story or two)!

What is your favorite quote?

It’s hard to pick one but my top favorites that I live by are:

  • “Discipline is the strongest form of self-love.” – Lewis Howes
  • “You can have it all, just not all at once. Prioritize what matters most to you in each season of life.” – Jennifer L. Scott
  • “Caring for others is an expression of what it means to be fully human.” – Pamela A. McCorduck
