Finding Time for You: Time Management Tips for Caregivers

Time is precious; so are you. Caregiving can be time-consuming, and it’s easy to feel like there’s no time left for yourself. That’s what makes time management so important. We’ve assembled a few tips to help you make the most of your day, so you can find time for those little moments—like enjoying a long shower or catching up with a friend—that are a big deal.

5 Time Management Tips for Caregivers 

Make it a priority: It all starts with telling yourself that you deserve to schedule time for you. It’s less likely to happen if you don’t include it as part of your caregiving schedule. If it helps, write it down and add it to your to-do list. If you haven’t already, read the Caregiver’s Promise we created as a reminder that even though you’re a caregiver, you’re also a person with your own wants and needs.

• Little moments mean a lot: Find the little moments that are meaningful to you—you don’t have to schedule a week’s vacation to benefit (though that does sound lovely). Take a 15-minute walk. Read a chapter in a new book. Savor your favorite snack. You’ll see how the benefits of making space for these little moments really add up over time.

• Try organizational apps: In addition to spiral notebooks, sticky notes, and cards, there are several digital options to help you keep organized and make the most of your time. Some highly rated (and free) options include Google Drive, Evernote, CareZone, and Todoist. With their many useful features, they can help you with setting up lists and reminders or organizing notes, schedules, and documents.

• Tiny steps can make a big difference: Many tasks or chores don’t have to be done in one big chunk of time. Do what you can, when you can, and keep at it when you’re able. For example, instead of cleaning the entire house in one go, you might try dusting one day and vacuuming the next. You’ll find you’re still accomplishing quite a bit.

• Avoid multitasking: Studies have shown multitasking can actually make us less efficient and increase the likelihood of mistakes. Focus on the task at hand and you’ll discover that you’re getting more done in a shorter amount of time.

By mastering time management, you can carve out those little moments for yourself. Not only will you be able to better care for your loved one, but you’ll also nurture your own well-being and happiness.
