What is a Primary Caregiver?
A primary caregiver is the main person responsible for providing care and support to someone who cannot care for themselves. A primary caregiver may be a family member (parent, spouse, child, sibling, etc.), a friend, a neighbor, or professional healthcare staff. Primary caregivers are not always professionally trained but can receive support and training to help them better care for themselves and the person they support.

A primary caregiver’s responsibilities include supporting daily activities like dressing, bathing, eating, and other personal care tasks. Primary caregivers may also provide logistical support such as medication management and transportation to appointments. Many primary caregivers also provide emotional support and assistance with advocacy or decision making.
