Frequently Asked Questions

General Caregiver Questions

A caregiver provides ongoing support, care, and assistance to someone who needs help with daily life due to age, illness, or disability. Caregivers often assist with personal care like bathing and dressing, preparing meals, managing medications, helping with mobility, and providing companionship. Caregivers also play an important role in monitoring changes in health and communicating with doctors or family members.

There are different types of caregivers, including family caregivers (who care for a loved one) and professional in-home caregivers such as nurses or home health aides. No matter the type, caregivers help ensure that individuals can live at home safely, comfortably, and with dignity.

Great question! Many times, we see ourselves as just a spouse, partner, parent, child, sibling, grandchild, friend, etc. helping someone. However, according to the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services caregivers are defined as family members, friends or neighbors who provide assistance to a person with a chronic illness or disabling condition. If this sounds like what you are doing—you are a caregiver.

Several states offer programs that allow family caregivers to get paid for the care they provide, with many options funded through Medicaid. These program details and eligibility requirements vary by state but are often designed to help individuals receive care at home instead of in a facility. One common model is Structured Family Caregiving, which provides financial support, coaching, and ongoing guidance to eligible caregivers.
