Faces of Careforth: Bernard Doherty

Faces of Careforth: Bernard Doherty

The support we provide to caregivers and families is deeply human—but it’s also made possible through thoughtful technology. Behind the scenes, our engineers build the digital connections that keep care teams, families, and systems aligned.

This month, we’re proud to highlight Bernard Doherty, a senior software engineer who has been with Careforth for 10 years. Over the past decade, he’s helped evolve our digital tools to meet the changing needs of caregivers and has grown alongside it. Read on as Bernard reflects on his own personal caregiving story and how he supports them in his work.

What is your role and how long have you worked at Careforth?

I’m a Senior Software Engineer, and I’ve been with Careforth for 10 years.

What inspired you to join our team?

I was initially drawn to Careforth by the opportunity to work with a modern technology stack. What truly stood out to me, though, was how that technology was being used to make a real difference in the lives of caregivers and families.

How do you support families and caregivers in your role, and why is it important?

My work focuses on building and enhancing the Careforth caregiver applications. These tools serve as a lifeline for caregivers by providing a secure, efficient, and accessible way for families, care teams, and professionals to stay connected and informed.

Do you have a personal connection to caregiving?

I’ve been a caregiver for my father for over five years. That personal experience has deepened my appreciation for the challenges caregivers face and strengthened my commitment to improving their experience through the tools I help create.

What do you enjoy most about your role?

I genuinely enjoy building software that has a direct, positive impact. It’s incredibly rewarding to see a new feature go live and know it’s helping someone.

How do you contribute to our company’s mission and values?

Through my work on the Careforth app, I help bring that mission to life by delivering tools that are intuitive, reliable, and tailored to real-world caregiving needs.

What’s something interesting about your job that people may not know?

Most people don’t realize just how collaborative software development is. While I spend a lot of time coding, a big part of my job involves working closely with designers, product managers, and other stakeholders to make sure we’re solving the right problems in the right way.

How do you maintain a positive work-life balance in this field?

I try to keep a clear structure during the workday, then fully unplug in the evenings to recharge. Spending time with family and getting outside really helps me reset.

What advice would you give to someone considering a career in healthcare?

I’ve seen firsthand how healthcare professionals become lifelines for families. If you’re considering this path, know that it’s more than just a job. It’s a chance to make a real difference in people’s lives at a time when it matters most.

What is one fun fact about you that your colleagues may not know about?

Earlier this year, I took a trip to Taiwan and Japan. In Taiwan, I traveled around the entire island, visiting every major city. I averaged about 25,000 steps a day—which, for a software engineer, is roughly 24,000 more than usual!
