This month, we spoke with Senior Payer Relationship Manager Saran Craig. Saran shares her 12-year journey with Careforth. She plays a critical role on the Health Plan Partnership team by expanding our Caregiver Coaching program so caregivers can access the resources and support they deserve. Read more about her experiences, motivations, and passion below:
What is your role and how long have you worked at Careforth?
My current role is Senior Payer Relationship Manager on the Health Plan Partnership team. I have been with Careforth for 12 years in August and have served in several roles during my tenure.
What inspired you to join our team?
I was inspired to join Careforth because our mission aligns with my personal life mission. When I was 14 years old, my grandfather began his battle with Frontotemporal Dementia. My family became caregivers. My grandmother was my everything, and watching her struggle and feel alone in that journey was devastating for me. From that point on, all I wanted to do with my life was support caregivers like her in their journey so they didn’t struggle like she did. No caregiver should go it alone, and this company is there to support caregivers every step of the way. I live my mission every day at Careforth.
How do you support families and caregivers in your role, and why is it important?
I serve families and caregivers in my role by partnering with health plans to offer caregiver coaching to caregivers across the country. By spreading the word of the work we do and bringing on new health plans, we’re able to extend our reach and serve more caregivers.
What do you enjoy most about your role?
I most enjoy reading the quotes and stories from caregivers receiving coaching. I am the “storywriter” on our team and get to capture and share the impact our coaching program has on caregivers every day. Many of these stories leave me in tears at my desk. It reminds me why I do what I do.
How do you contribute to our company’s mission and values?
I contribute to our company’s mission by spreading the word of the work we do to health plans nationally, so we can expand the reach of Careforth and surround more caregivers with connectedness.
What’s something interesting about your job that people may not know?
I get to be in calls and meetings with health plan colleagues in dozens of states across the country. Some days I start “in Florida,” spend my midday “in Kansas,” and end my day “in Arizona.” It’s an amazing experience to work in so many unique markets and environments throughout the day and week! This job has allowed me to make an impact from Massachusetts to Hawaii and everywhere in between.
How do you maintain a positive work-life balance in this field?
As a single mom of three, this job has afforded me better work-life balance than I could have ever dreamed of. I have learned to use my flexibility to be there for my kids when it counts most, always knowing that I will find the time to get the job done. It took me a while to learn that I am the best version of myself when I have balance. I know now that it’s the quality of the work I give to Careforth, not the quantity of hours I clock. Taking the time at the end of the day, on weekends and holidays, to unplug and recharge ensures I am rejuvenated for work when I next open my laptop or get on that next call.
What advice would you give to someone considering a career in healthcare?
If you are a spiritual person and are looking to make a difference in the world and serve others, healthcare is the place to be! Working in healthcare has always filled my spiritual cup. While the days can be long and the work can be stressful, when I lay my head down at night, I know I’ve contributed to an organization that makes a difference in thousands of lives every day. Working in healthcare allows me to serve my fellow humans and provide for my family. It is a blessing, and I can’t imagine working in any other field!
What is one fun fact about you that your colleagues may not know about?
In addition to being a proud mom of three humans, I am a proud fur mama. I have 4 cats and a dog that thinks she is a cat, and they are my world! Winnie (the Lab) even helped me clock 18,000 steps for our recent Step Up for Alzheimer’s Challenge. She is a Careforth pup all the way!
What is your favorite quote?
“Smooth seas do not make skillful sailors.” – Chinese Proverb
