Chronic Illness

What is a Chronic Illness?

A chronic illness is a health condition or disease that lasts for an extended period of time, usually longer than a year. Examples of chronic conditions include cancer, diabetes, asthma, arthritis, high blood pressure, and mental health disorders like anxiety or depression. A chronic disease diagnosis requires ongoing medical attention, limits activities of daily living, or both. Chronic illness is common in the U.S., with six in 10 Americans having at least one.

What are Some Examples of Caregiving for Someone with a Chronic Illness?

Caregiving for someone with a chronic illness depends on their symptoms and daily challenges. They may need help with daily activities like eating, bathing, dressing, or mobility. There could be multiple medications they need to take to manage their chronic symptoms—caregivers can make sure they’re taken at the right time and that drugs don’t interact in harmful ways. It’s also important they have opportunities for social connections, whether it be with friends, family, or support groups.
