St. Louis Post-Dispatch Letter Highlights Structured Family Caregiving in Missouri
On September 24th, the St. Louis Post-Dispatch published a letter speaking to the availability of Structured Family Caregiving (SFC) to provide coaching and support for family caregivers of loved ones with Alzheimer’s or related dementias in Missouri. The letter stressed the importance of recognizing the tremendous burden placed on these caregivers, which often goes overlooked.
“Recently, our state’s lawmakers worked alongside the Alzheimer’s Association of Missouri to secure funding for a new program to support people living with Alzheimer’s and their family caregivers,” the letter, written by St. Louis resident Jack Oliver, states. “The program, called Structured Family Caregiving, is administered by the Division of Senior and Disability Services. The program provides ongoing professional and financial support to family caregivers who live with and provide care to their loved ones with Alzheimer’s disease or dementia.”
“Before and during the coronavirus public health emergency, family caregivers stepped into full-time caregiving roles to ensure their loved ones could remain healthy and safe at home. I applaud Missouri’s political leadership and the Alzheimer’s Association of Missouri for recognizing the urgent need to provide these family caregivers with the support they need. The loved ones who make this sacrifice deserve to be recognized and honored so they know that they are appreciated — and that they are not alone.”
