Faces of Careforth: Candice Brown

In this month’s Faces of Careforth installment, we sat down with Account Manager Candice Brown. Candice joined Careforth in 2021 and is an important part of our Connecticut sales team. With a caregiving background herself, Candice brings a unique perspective to her role and how she supports family caregivers. Keep reading to learn about Candice’s work and the meaning she finds in each experience.

What is your role and how long have you worked at Careforth?

I am an Account Manager for Connecticut and have been with Careforth for 3 years and 7 months!

What inspired you to join our team?

I knew about Careforth (then Caregiver Homes) long before I joined. Previously, I was a case manager with an access agency that made referrals to this program when [Adult Family Living] AFL was appropriate. I recognized how they were supporting families, the communication they had with myself and others, and the value. I did not hesitate when the opportunity arose for me to join!

How do you support families and caregivers in your role, and why is it important?

Oftentimes, I am the first point of contact for caregivers and their families. That first conversation allows me to introduce myself and listen. From there, they know I will stay in contact and that they can reach out anytime. The process to be approved can be long and overwhelming for some. Families appreciate having someone they can call and feel comfortable with to support them in their journey.

What do you enjoy most about your role?

Being the one to tell caregivers and families that there is support for them. I take the time to listen to each and every caregiving story and what they’re going through. I am often brought to tears hearing how thankful they are to have heard about our program and how much they needed the support.

How do you contribute to our company’s mission and values?

“To lead with heart;” this has always resonated with me. My heart is and always will be with those that are so often looked over: the caregivers. My role allows me to tell them we’re here for you and thank you for what you’re doing for your loved one each and every day.

What’s something interesting about your job that people may not know?

I can think outside of the box and can connect with so many different professionals. I learn from them and what they offer while educating them on Careforth’s services. I have met with elder law attorneys, funeral home representatives, veterans’ associations, and school resource centers. They all work with people in our communities!

How do you maintain a positive work-life balance in this field?

It can be hard some days, working full-time while being a mom and wife, but knowing I work for a company that supports positive work-life balance is key. I have connected with peers and colleagues that remind me of this; when I need to take a break and

focus on whatever may be of most importance, it’s okay! The flexibility, understanding, and support offered by Careforth makes managing everything much easier.

What advice would you give to someone considering a career in healthcare?

If you want to make a difference and see a positive impact on people’s lives, do it!

What is one fun fact about you that your colleagues may not know about?

I am in the process of writing a book with my mother who was paralyzed when I was 9 years old. It tells our journey and how it impacted each of us—a wife and mother, and a young child, teen, and adult who became a caregiver overnight. Stay tuned!

What is your favorite quote?

“Fall down seven times; get up eight.” – Denzel Washington
